In 2012 Mobeen Butt helped organise a public seminar for the Open University’s Building on History: Religion in London project. Working with Gavin Moorhead, the project’s Research Associate, Mobeen liaised with Croydon Mosque & Islamic Centre and various groups and individuals to organise the logistics and marketing of the ‘Engaging with the past to inform the present: The Muslim community of London’ event on Saturday 1st December 2012.
Mobeen opened the day with a presentation on the thirteen centuries of shared history between Britain and Islam. He spoke of his heritage project gather material to archive from Muslim communities in Croydon, and his exhibition at the Museum of Croydon. He also demonstrated the pioneering technologies he had been using to engage wider and younger audiences.
Speakers on the day included Professor Ansari (Royal Holloway, University of London), Dr Graham Smith (Oral History Society), Salahuddeen Haleem (Indigent Muslim Burial Fund), Annabel Gill and Shaynul Khan (East London Mosque Archives Project).
The core team for Building on History: Religion in London was Professor John Wolfe, Dr John Maiden and Dr Gavin Moorhead (all from the Open University).
